Description

My Review :

Saathi pads are Biodegradable & Compostable, using plant-based materials for the leak-proof outer layers of the napkin. They don’t contain chemicals and provide a rash and irritation-free experience. They also have a subscription model, letting one subscribe for 3 months.

The pads a little thicker than the conventional pads but are completely plastic and chemical-free – so isn’t that an awesome thing?

Why these sustainable pads?

The average conventional sanitary pad contains 3.4g of plastic. A woman uses more than 7500 sanitary pads in her lifetime. This means that over her lifetime, the average woman will generate 23kg of plastic from sanitary pads alone. And it was found that in 2016, there were 150,000 tons of sanitary pad waste in India. Tons! When disposed of, Saathi pads degrade within six months – 1200 times faster than plastic pads!

Ingredients :

Saathi pads are made with eco-friendly material – the banana fiber. Banana fiber is an eco-friendly material that provides you great absorbency. The fiber comes from the stem of the banana tree. The pads are individually wrapped in a plant-based cover.

About Sathi :

Saathi is a social enterprise and manufacturing company that makes eco-friendly hygiene products.

Saathi pads are made with banana fiber.  There are more than 1.2 million acres of banana trees planted in India. Saathi buys the banana stems from collectives of local farmers. Before there was a use for banana fiber, farmers would compost the banana trees after each harvest. But now, they earn extra income by selling the fiber. After the fiber is extracted, the residue left over is fermented and used by farmers as an organic fertilizer. Most plastic sanitary pads use the chlorine-bleached wood pulp as an absorbent, while most other eco-friendly pads use cotton. Banana fiber uses six times less water per ton produced than cotton, and 10 times fewer fertilizers.

Since bananas are an existing food crop, no extra land is being taken up by the production of this fiber. There are already 9 million hectares dedicated to banana farming worldwide. By trailblazing the use of banana fiber as a consumer product raw material, Saathi hopes to champion its expanded use.

By purchasing Saathi pads, you also give the gift of biodegradable pads to women in rural communities.  Check out our #OneMillionPads Program in rural Jharkhand!
